What to Listen for on a First Play
Three ways to hear what makes a new rock record distinct before reaching for comparisons.

Follow the Rhythm Section
On the first pass, listen for what the bass and drums agree on. Then notice the moments when one player goes somewhere else. A push ahead of the beat or a few measures of restraint can do more for a chorus than an extra guitar part.
Listen Again at a Lower Volume
Turn the record down on the second pass. Which parts still hold your attention? That can be a good clue to what the band built into the writing and what the production adds.
